How harmful is distracted driving?

Drivers need to know where they are going and keep their attention focused on the road. Not everyone follows such simple advice, however, and car crashes sometimes follow. Drivers who allow themselves to become distracted might be lucky to experience a near miss on a Texas road. Others do not get away so easily. Even minor distractions could result in fatal collisions, which is why drivers, motorcyclists, and bicyclists must be aware of the dangers that distracted driving brings.

Distracted driving comes in many forms

Motor vehicle accidents caused by people texting and driving or taking on a phone rank high on the list of regrettable distractions. Many people realize the dangers and opt not to use electronic devices while driving. Concerns about accidents might keep them from using hands-free systems, too, as multimedia systems in vehicles can take attention off the road.

Distracted driving may take other forms that people do not think are as serious. Rubbernecking is not an uncommon behavior, and many drivers have a hard time not looking at something curious on the side of the road. However, this increases the risk of causing an accident.

Eating while driving, putting on makeup, talking to someone in the passenger seat, or even daydreaming could be enough to cause a collision. Truthfully, anything that distracts someone from operating a vehicle safely may cause a crash.

Legal troubles and distracted driving

Drivers who cause accidents may find themselves liable for the resulting injuries and property damage. Any behavior that constitutes distracted driving may fall under the category of negligence, so drivers who engage in anything that takes away from concentration or reaction time might find themselves liable for a crash.

Negligent drivers hope their auto liability insurance policies will save them financially. Maybe the insurance company will cover the other party’s crash expenses, but the possibility exists that the damage might exceed policy limits, which is why it’s so important to drive safely and prevent accidents.
